battery opera wine & cheese thingy # 2 !
Thursday October 27th, 2011. 7-9pm
Come ponder on the alchemy and wonder of wine, cheese, charcuterie and art while helping us raise some much-needed cash
at Les Amis du Fromage (on the east side)
843 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
$60 per person (early bird "Artist rate" of $40 and "cheese-eating-childrens rate" of $20 based on limited availability). Every $60 ticket purchased is eligible for a $20 Registered Charitable Donation Receipt.
for tickets,
please call 604-688-8583
or email info@batteryopera.com
Here's how it'll work:
For your $60 you will get tasters of 5 Okanagan wines selected by your personal *semi-sommelier, David McIntosh. In addition, Lee Su-Feh and her favourite bartender will concoct a special non-alcoholic masterpiece of refreshment.
These will be matched by the cheese masters at Les Amis du Fromage with as much cheese and charcuterie as you can comfortably eat. Probably more.
David will provide some art too, but nothing too heavy and very short. Nudity and profanity will have to be supplied by you, if desired
– in aid of which, there will be more wine available at a cash bar.
And what's your support in aid of?
When you buy a ticket to the battery opera performance fundraiser, or give a donation, you are supporting a company that has been described as “fearlessly iconoclastic”, whose work is “brainy and bawdy” and “sexy, propulsive, deeply metaphorical”.
You are also supporting a non-profit arts organization, and by doing so, you are saying that art and artists matter in making our society a better place. You are supporting us in the belief that the artist has a responsibility to hold space for all that is non-linear, mysterious and beautiful.
Your donation goes towards our operational costs which include artist fees, costumes, props, sets, publicity fees, office and studio rental, and administrative fees. Your donation allows us to show to various funding bodies – public and private - in a concrete way the public support that we have.
If you are unable to attend, or you just don't like cheese but would still like to make a donation, please scroll down to the Canada Helps button at the bottom of this page. We also gladly accept cheques.
*David's exams were going quite well until he woke up with a bad attitude and decided to improvise the Formal Service Exam and then wrote a couple of slack Marxist diatribes for the Food and Beverage Management Essays. The Guild has given him a three year grace period to "...get his mind right.".
2011 WINES
-Tantaulus 2008 Old Vines Riesling - a rare and "polarising" wine that'll not only knock your socks off, it'll dissolve all your clothes with it's searingly focused acidity. Exhilarating. Obviously I liked it. Winery says-
Intense aromas of lime and lemon with a hint of tropical fruit leap from the glass. On the palate, pineapple, melon and citrus flavours envelope the tongue. It sings with balance and focus while displaying a depth of character only mature vines can create. Naturally high acidity accentuates its wonderful food pairing possibilities
-Wild Goose 2010 Pinot Gris. Always an excellent wine. Aromatic and well structured. Won some golds. KInd of the "classic okanagan" (so far) Pinot Gris. Winery says-
Floral fruit flavours of peach & pear
-La Frenz 2010 Sémillon. I got the last bottles in existence from the winery. Gold and best of class in a bunch of competitions. Winery says-
citrus grapefruit, honeysuckle, and lemonade with a hint of lemon zest. As is typical of this variety, more golden color, intriguing toasty, straw, and dried fig characters. - couldn't taste it cause there was so little left.
-Mt Boucherie 2009 Pinot Noir - A really nice "Burgundian style" Pinot Noir. Smooth earthy and pleasantly mushroomy. It's the best version I've tasted from the Ok. Won some golds. Winery says-
Aromas and flavours of earthy mushrooms, bramble and red berries. A medium bodied red with silky tannins on the finish.
-La Fenz NV Liqueur Muscat - a lovely sweet fortified dessert wine. Blended in a sherry like "Solera" system. It's gonna make an excellent matcher. Won a bunch of medals. Winery says- It has beautiful flavors of caramelised brown sugar, cinnamon, muscat fruit with that lovely sweet , power and complexity that can only come from time
In addition, Lee Su-Feh and her favourite bartender from Calabash will concoct a special non-alcoholic masterpiece of refreshment. We will also have a cash bar with a several specially selected reds from the battery opera vault.
These will be matched by the cheese masters at Les Amis du Fromage with as much cheese and charcuterie as you can comfortably eat. Probably more.
